Challenge
MTN Group briefed our team to build a platform for digital skills programmes that are directly linked to digital jobs. Their challenge was to build an ecosystem for users to find a learning stream, become educated in that field, be mentored and then hired as a professional. This approach focuses on both the beneficiary and the outcome – with a clear user journey that can be iterated upon as new skills emerge in the digital sector. The platform aims to help address a lack of digital literacy and unemployment in Africa.
Challenges our users currently face in trying to learn digital skills include poor accessibility to career guidance in high school, few graduate mentorship opportunities and lack of access to the internet. The platform would need to withstand varying internet quality and devices of users across Africa. Our client also wanted to meet the needs of people with disabilities, who are often excluded from opportunities for growth.

MTN Group tasked our team with creating a platform for digital skills programs linked to digital jobs.
Solution
In just 4 weeks we gathered input from MTN and partners and designed a tangible prototype for usability testing data collection. MTN Group collaborated with MTN Foundations and CSI Divisions in Nigeria, eSwatini, Rwanda, Ghana, South Africa and Zambia to involve youth in usability testing.

Impact
Today, MTN Skills Academy features a range of courses from LinkedIn Learning, GSMA and Coursera. Users can also find expert career guidance via MTN’s partnership with PACE Career Centre. The free-to-use platform offers country-specific content based on current market demands and location-specific scholarship opportunities.
AccessiBe allows users to customise the PWA to accommodate disabilities, including visual impairments. In future, French-speaking users will be able to translate the content they see at the tap of a button.
