Challenge

MTN Group tasked our team with creating a platform for digital skills programs linked to digital jobs. The goal was to help users find learning streams, upskill, be mentored, and get hired within the digital ecosystem. The platform aimed to address digital literacy and unemployment in Africa, focusing on accessibility, mentorship, and internet/data availability. It also needed to cater to people with disabilities, providing a comprehensive and inclusive user journey. Around 38 million young people in sub-Saharan Africa are not in education, employment, or training (NEET).

Solution

Our team facilitated a Design Sprint to prototype the platform, gathering input from MTN and partners for usability testing in multiple African countries.

The final platform features complex API integrations and uses no-code tools like Framer for interactive design. The Progressive Web Application (PWA) includes the AccessiBe accessWidget to ensure accessibility for all users, enhancing UI adjustments and optimizing screen reader and keyboard navigation compatibility. This inclusive approach ensured the platform was engaging and easy to navigate, even with varying internet quality and devices.

The platform allows customization for disabilities and plans to add French translations. In 2024, it won the Techtrends Zambia Award for Best New Tech Initiative of 2023. The Academy is poised to make a significant impact on digital skills and employment across Africa.
